Hong Kong pro-democracy media tycoon Jimmy Lai arrested

Prominent Hong Kong pro-democracy activist Jimmy Lai has been arrested for "collusion with foreign powers," said Mark Simon, an executive at the tycoon's media firm Next Digital Monday morning local time.

Why it matters: Lai was charged under the national security law imposed by the Chinese government in late June that gives Beijing more powers over the former British colony, per Bloomberg. President Trump last month signed a bill sanctioning Chinese officials over the law and the Chinese government's efforts to strip Hong Kong of its autonomy. Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam's name was added to the sanctions list Friday.
