Afghanistan story generates surge of readership for conservative media

Data: NewsWhip; Chart: Will Chase/Axios

Web traffic, social engagement and TV ratings for conservative outlets are booming in response to the ongoing crisis in Afghanistan.

Why it matters: โ€œI haven't seen this much sustained coverage from the right on a single topic since the early days of the pandemic in March and April of 2020, and those months produced huge traffic numbers for conservative media outlets,โ€ said Howard Polskin, an expert on conservative media.

By the numbers: Traffic to 20 of the top conservative news websites was up 4.2% the week of Aug. 10, when Afghanistan began to dominate the news cycle, according to data from SimilarWeb.

  • Conservative news sites had been declining for months following the Capitol siege.
  • Conservative sites saw higher traffic jumps over the last two weeks than mainstream media websites, like USA Today or Reuters.

TV ratings for Fox News have been soaring. The network beat all three broadcast networks in ratings last week for the first time since last September, per the AP.

On social media, stories about Afghanistan from a set of six conservative media outlets are getting more than twice as much engagement as stories about inflation โ€” the previous topic they were hammering President Biden over โ€” according to data from NewsWhip.

  • Top-performing stories included accounts of chaos and desperation in Kabul, as well as calls for Biden to resign from former President Trump, and for impeachment, from one of the Navy SEALs who killed Osama bin Laden.

Be smart: After initially focusing heavily on the Biden administrationโ€™s diplomatic failures and miscalculations, the narrative on the right is shifting to focus more on whether the U.S. should be hosting Afghanistan refugees.

  • "For the right-wing press, this is a galvanizing event that has completely dominated coverage on most conservative news websites," Polskin said.

Yes, but: Conservative media are walking a line โ€” coming down on Biden for how he has carried out the withdrawal, while not criticizing the decision itself, which was supported and brokered with the Talibanย  by Trump.

Olympics greet visitors with app chaos

In the days leading up to the Tokyo Games, journalists had two big concerns โ€” whether the Olympics would really happen, and if they would ever get access to all the mobile apps and websites required to get into the country and do their jobs.

Why it matters: Battling COVID-19 is crucial, of course. But most of the challenges faced by media and other Olympics participants were technical obstacles that had little to do with preventing the virus' spread.

Eight of the 10 most-followed NCAA Elite 8 basketball players are women

Impending legislation will allow student-athletes to monetize their name, image and likeness (NIL) through sponsored social media posts and other means.

Why it matters: If athletes had full control of their NIL rights, the top women's basketball players in this year's Elite Eight would have greater earning power than the top men.

Minnesota court rules rape charge doesn't apply if the victim got willingly drunk

The Minnesota Supreme Court on Wednesday ruled that a man who had sex with a woman while she was passed out on his couch cannot be found guilty of rape because the victim got herself drunk beforehand, The Washington Post reports.

The big picture: Minnesota is one of the many states that says that for a victim to be too mentally incapacitated to give consent, they must have become intoxicated against their will, such as if a person secretly drugged someone's drink.

House race shows Latino pushback over migrant crisis

This story is from Axios Latino, a new collaboration with Noticias Telemundo that launches today. Sign up here.

A special election to fill Interior Secretary Deb Haaland's former House seat is revealing growing frustration among Latino candidates about the Biden administration's handling of rising migration at the southern border.

Why it matters: The dynamics in this race in a Democratic-leaning and heavily Hispanic central New Mexico district representing Albuquerque could be an early indicator of how Latino voters assess President Biden's performance in office.
