Retail sales figures blow past expectations

Retail sales jumped 5.3% last month — blowing past the 1.2% increase anticipated by economists, the Commerce Department said on Wednesday.

Why it matters: It’s thefirst month-over-month increase inshopping figures since September — with consumers getting a boost from the most recent pandemic relief package.


By the numbers: The $568 billion spent across retailers last month is 7.4% higher than this time last year, before the pandemic hit.

  • Retail sales initially surpassed pre-pandemic levels last year, as consumers opened their wallets after the shock of the coronavirus and early relief measures took effect.

Teachers union would support teacher vaccination requirement

Randi Weingartren, president of the American Federation of Teachers, tells the Axios Re:Cap podcast that her union would support requiring in-school teachers to take a COVID-19 vaccine, once one has been approved and is readily available.

  • AFT represents 1.7 million members in over 3,000 local affiliates.

Her statement: "We would support that... Just like we have vaccines we require kids to take to be in school in normal times."

Capitol Police officer Billy Evans, who was killed last Friday in a vehicle attack on the Capitol, will lie in honor in the U.S. Capitol Rotunda on April 13, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) announced Tuesday.

What they're saying: "In giving his life to protect our Capitol and our Country, Officer Evans became a martyr for our democracy," Pelosi and Schumer said in a statement.
