China passes law to control Hong Kong elections

China's legislature on Thursday passed a resolution called the "patriots governing Hong Kong" in a move to overhaul Hong Kong's elections, per the BBC.

Why it matters: The move effectively gives the Chinese Communist Party control of Hong Kong's elections, reducing democratic representation and allowing a "pro-Beijing panel to vet 'patriotic' candidates," the BBC notes.

  • Secretary of State Antony Blinken told Congress Wednesday that the Biden administration would "speak out and take action against egregious violations of democracy and human rights in Hong Kong," the Financial Times reports.

Multi-state lawsuit will target Facebook's freeze-out of competitors

Facebook's past moves cutting off competitors' access to its platform will be one target of the multi-state antitrust lawsuit against Facebook expected to be filed today, according to a person familiar with the case.

Why it matters: State attorneys general are looking to build a case that Facebook has illegally used a monopoly in social networking to elbow out competitors.
