Audio app Clubhouse comes to Android, expanding beyond iOS

Clubhouse on Sunday announced that it will begin rolling out its beta version for Android.

Why it matters: Downloads for the app have plummeted as the pandemic begins to regress. Expanding the app to the second-largest operating system in the U.S. — and the largest globally — will help Clubhouse grow its audience.

Details: Until now, the app was only available via invitation to Apple iOS users. Starting Sunday, the app will be available to Android users in the U.S.

  • The Android version will roll out to English-speaking markets in the days and weeks ahead, followed by other countries globally.
  • Clubhouse will be continuing its invitation-only system for Android to help it roll-out product updates smoothly to a smaller group of people.

Android is finally here! You can download the Clubhouse beta right now in the US, & around the world in the coming days/weeks.

Before you ask...yes, still invite-only. We're managing growth so we can build more sustainable infrastructure before the floodgates open. Soon(ish)! pic.twitter.com/EdltTZS0hD

The big picture: The live, social audio craze exploded during pandemic-driven lockdowns, and it looks like it's here to stay.

  • But Clubhouse is facing competition from new apps and tech companies like Twitter and Facebook that are building competitive products.
  • Clubhouse recently raised a new funding round valuing the app at $4 billion.

Elementary school students in the U.S. ended the school year four to five months behind their expected level of academic achievement, according to a new report.

White House selects destinations for first wave of vaccine donations

The Biden administration has laid out its framework for sharing vaccines for the world and named the recipients of the first 25 million doses, taking a major step toward becoming a global vaccine supplier.

Why it matters: The U.S. had been the only major vaccine producer to keep virtually its entire supply at home while countries looked to Russia or China for doses. But Biden has pledged to share at least 80 million doses this month and additional shipments beyond that.

LeBron James and private equity firm to buy into Boston Red Sox

Boston Red Sox majority owner John Henry has agreed to sell a roughly 11% stake in the team's parent company to RedBird Capital Partners, Axios has confirmed with a source close to the situation. Separately, LeBron James has acquired around a 1% stake in the club.

Why it matters: It's a massive return on investment for Henry, who in 2001 paid what was then a record $700 million for the Red Sox. This deal values its parent company, Fenway Sports Group, at around $7.3 billion.
