Pelosi say House will create commission to investigate Jan. 6 attack

Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) told the House Steering and Policy Committee Tuesday night that she will appoint a select committee to investigate the Jan. 6 insurrection, multiple outlets reports.

Why it matters: The creation of such a committee means House Democrats, who currently have a majority, would be responsible for the investigation.

  • The committee was only one of the options Pelosi was allegedly considering, and will allow Democrats to channel their efforts into "one place," per CNN.

The state of play: The Senate in May failed to reach the 60 votes necessary to advance a bill creating a bipartisan commission to investigate the insurrection, voting 54-35 as Republicans invoked the first legislative filibuster of the Biden presidency. They claimed it would be weaponized against them in the 2022 elections.

  • The House previously passed the legislation with 35 Republicans voting in favor.
  • Earlier in June, President Biden said he would not appoint his own commission to investigate the Capitol Riot, preferring Congress to take the lead.
