El Salvador's legislature voted late Tuesday to make bitcoin legal tender.
Why it matters: El Salvador will become the first country to formally adopt the digital currency once President Nayib Bukele signs the legislation into law. Bukele, who pushed for the legislation, hailed the passage of the bill by declaring in a Twitter post "History!"
The #BitcoinLaw has been approved by a supermajority in the Salvadoran Congress.
